EASTSIDE LEGENDS - LITTLE JULIAN HERRERA

Before getting into the life and music career of Little Julian Herrera I must make a couple of points. Little Julian Herrera is my favorite singer with the finest voice to come out of the Eastside Sound. There is not much known about his life nor his disapperance after 1962 but he would become the idol of the young Chicano community in Southern California. He would become the first teen sensation of the Eastside preceeding Ritchie Valens.

I was so intrigued by the music & mystery of Little Julian Herrera that I sent an e-mail to Steve Propes, author, record colector and disc jockey on radio station WPMD. Steve dedicated one of this 45's shows to Little Julian, playing his records & trying to fill in some of the missing pieces of the man's life.

I also frequented Wenzels Music Town in Downey & owner Tom Wenzel & I would talk about Little Julian & Tom would tell me what he remebered of Little Julian's days on the Dig label. Truly fascinating stuff.

Little Julian was not Latino but Eastern European. According to some sources his given name was Ezekial and that he ran away from home in Massacheusetts at the age of eleven & hitchiked to Los Angeles. He also went by the name Ron Gregory according to a probation officer who had a picture of him.

Little Julian would settle in Boyle Heights, a suburb of East Los Angeles and adapt the name Herrera from the Mexican-American family who took him in. The name Little Julian came from Don Julian of the Meadowlarks who had a hit with "Heaven & Paradise" at the time

Little Julian met Johnny Otis  who asked him to perform in his shows at El Monte Legion Stadium where he became a star attraction. In the summer of 1956 Little Julian would record for Otis' newly formed Dig label. The session would produce "Lonely Lonely Nights" and "In Exchange For Your Love'. The group backing Little Julian is probably the Premiers who were also on the Dig label. The record would be a big hit locally but would do little elsewhere.

You may listen to both "Lonely Lonely Nights" and "In Exhange For Your Love" here:

In the spring of 1957 Otis would get around to releasing a follow-up record "Symbol Of Heaven" and "Here In My Arms"

Shortly afterward, Johnny Otis abandoned his Dig label to pursue opportunities at Capital Records. Little Julian was introduced to the Tigers, a Pomona-based group through the lead singer of the Premiers, Sammy Yates. With Art Laboe as the producer Little Julian Herrera & The Tigers recorded "I Remember Linda" for the Starla label. The flip side was a Little Richard tune "True Fine Mama". "I Remember Linda" became a local hit due to the constant plugging by Art Laboe on his live radio show from Scriverner's Drive-In.
Although Ron Shy claims that he & James Thompson wrote "I Remember Linda" the label credits Egnoian (Art Laboe) and Otis (Johnny Otis) as writers. As the story goes Linda was James Thompson's girlfriend.

Julian would be accused of statutory rape killing record sales and after a stint in jail he would disappear. In 1963, he was rediscovered by Dick "Huggy Boy" Hugg who was told that Little Julian was performing in Tijuana. Hugg would release an updated version of "Lonely Lonely Nights" and "I Want To Be With You" on the Essar label. For this release Little Julian was backed by the Illusions, a band from the Bellflower-Long Beach area. Of major interest to record collectors, there are two markedly different takes of "Lonely Lonely Nights" issued on the Essar label with identical release numbers for which there is no known explanation.

You will find both takes of Little Julian Herrera & The Illusions on the CD "The Illusions - Surfin & Stompin The Complete Story" released on the Gee-Dee label.

Little Julian's last release would be "Your Careless Love" and "You Will Cry" released on the Emmo label. Another Eastside Classic this record is extremely hard to find.

In 1963, Eldo records would re-issue "Lonely Lonely Nights" & "In Exchange Foe Your Love"

The Compete Recordings Of Little Julian Herrera is available on compact disc.

Little Julian would disappear into obscurity again. According to Huggy Boy's last interview, Little Julian's body was found in Elysian Park. RIP Little Julian.

With just five singles to his musical discography, Little Julian Herrera remains a mystery but a true Eastside Legend.

THE EASTSIDE SOUND HITS THE RADIO WAVES - GODFREY KERR

Godfrey Kerr was born Sptember 10, 1942 in Dublin, Ireland. At the age of 12 he & his family moved to Culver City, California. During his childhood in Ireland he liked traditional American Pop that would change. He started listening to the R&B played by the likes of Hunter Hancock and Huggy Boy.

After high school Kerr ran a some small record labels, Kay-Gee, Gee-Kay and Flashback and launched a mail-order business selling oldies albums, as well as serving as promter & MC for dances & shows. The dances which Godfrey promoted were mostly held at locations on the East Side such as the Big Union Hall and the Montebello Ballroom (a venue I attended whenever I could). The line-ups would feature top Chicano bands as well as soul & R&B artists. Through these shows Godfrey became good friends with Willie G of Thee Midniters.

In 1964 Godfrey started subbing for Huggy Boy on KRLA and later KALI. This gave Godfrey an established Chicano listening audience. He would eventually move to KTYM where he hosted his own afternnon show from Monday thru Friday.

Also in 1964, Godfrey co-produced with Andy Belvin the Alfred & Joe Eastside classic "Darling Dear" on the Kay-Gee label (Kay-Gee 101)

In 1967 Godfrey would record "Down Whittier Boulevard" vocal and instrumental with Thee Midniters on the Whittier label (a label which featured many of the Midniters hits).

You may listen to "Down Whittier Boulevard" here:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_TlK3GbOgMo

In September 1965 Godfrey recorded a cover of Kim Fowley's psychedelic rap 'The Trip" backed by Alfred & Joe's band The Noblemen.

The B-side is an instrumental entitled "Come On, Come On" and credited to Godfrey's Group, presumably The Noblemen on the promo copy and credited to the Hard-Rockers on the stock copy

Godfrey put together four oldies albums titled "Godfrey Presents" featuring obscure ballads by Chicano and black artists. He stayed at KTYM until 1968.

THE EASTSIDE SOUND HITS THE RADIO WAVES - ART LABOE

Before getting into a biography and the accomplishments of Art Laboe I would like to begin with a personal story about the man. In 1968 I was attending East Los Angeles College and was elected station manager of campus radio station KELA.  As one of my first duties, I wrote letters to some forty plus record companies to bolster our music library but received less than a handful of responses. One response came in the form of an invitation by Art Laboe of Original Sound records who invited me & my engineer Chris to visit his record company on Sunset Blvd in Hollywood. There we were treated to lunch, a guided tour of the facility and upon our leaving were given a complete set of Oldies But Goodies Albums (there were only 9 at the time) and a stack of 45's on the Original Sound label. The kindness Art showed in doing this for me & for the college is something I will never forget and led me to doing my
own requests & dedication show on KELA.

Art Laboe was born Arthur Egnoian in Salt Lake City, Utah on August 7, 1925. He would move to California at an early age and attended Stanford University. In 1943, he was hired by KSAN in San Francisco. He would move to LA and began as a DJ in 1949 on stations, KPOP, KRKD and broadcast shows from Scrivner's Drive-In restaurants. Later he moved to KXLA which became KRLA where he stayed for many years.
To go into all of Art Laboe's accomplishments would take up a large manuscript but here some that must be mentioned.
Laboe was the person who coined the phrase "Oldies But Goodies". This came about from the fact that when the teenegers requested songs from Art's playlist at Scrivner's they requested songs which were a few years older "oldies" and Art termed them "Oldies But Goodies".

Through his Original Sounds Record company, Laboe put together the first-ever record album, to feature hit songs by various artists from more than one label. Titled "Oldies But Goodies," the album stayed on Billboard Magazine's Top 100 LPs chart for over three years.

Laboe will always be remembered for the concert & dance shows he promoted in the Los Angeles area, especially those at El Monte Legion Stadium from the late 1950's on.

Laboe produced one of my favorite Eastside classics Little Julian Herrera's "I Remember Linda" for the Starla Records (Stars Of Los Angeles) label in 1958.

For many years Laboe has set up scholarship funds for high school kids in Los Angeles & other communities & continues to do philanthropic work.

Today, Art Laboe continues in music as an MC, promoter, and Internet disc jockey. His "Killer Oldies" show can be heard every Sunday night in select cities across the West Coast. Laboe's Sunday evening dedication show on Hot 92 JAMZ has been rated #1 consistently across many demographic for the past several years, and now hosts the 7PM to Midnight slot weeknights
