BROWN EYED SOUL: THE SOUND OF EAST L.A. - VOLUME 1

Released in 1997 by Rhino Records, this is the first of a three disc series featuring songs by Chicano artists and soulful ballads favored by Chicano listeners. The influence of Chicanos as musicians and as an influential listening audience has been omitted from many rock & roll histories but Rhino's compilations bring this influence out of the darkness and into the light.
  The songs on this compilation are tunes requested on local radio stations and played by local disc jockeys such as Huggy Boy, Godfrey and Art Laboe. They are also the songs we listened to while cruising Whittier Boulevard.
  The compact disc comes with an informative booklet with many rare photographs and is a great and must buy for any beginning collector.

EAST L.A. - ROCKIN' THE BARRIO

Released in 2006 by Gordo Enterprises on theVarese Sarande Label comes another fine compilation of eighteen Eastside Sound tracks all from the Rampart Record label. This set features the different styles of music that influenced the Eastside Sound - doo wop, soul, dance tunes, garage, instrumentals and even the British Invasion.
  This compact disc is still available through many online retailers and at local record stores. I highly recommend you picking up a copy,

RECOMMENDED READING - A WORLD OF ITS OWN

Matt Garcia is an associate professor of American civilization and ethnic studies at Brown University.
His book A WORLD OF ITS OWN  is yet another look at the intercultural struggles of the Greater Los Angeles area tracing back to the 1900's
  He explores the social & cultural forces that helped make the city the expansive & diverse metropolis it is today.
  The book presents historical & educational information and has many rare photographs. The highlight of the book is a chapter called "Memories Of El Monte" where Mr Garcia gives a fascinating account of the hay days of El Monte Legion Stadium and other dance halls in Greater Los Angeles.
This chapter alone makes the book worth buying.

ROCKIN' TEXAS RHYTHM & BLUES WITH THE CHICANO SOUL REVUE

One of the best shows I've seen in recent years took place at Nick's Taste Of Texas in Covina, California last night. Promoter, Ruben Molina put together a "cavalcade of stars"  who performed a "cavalcade of hits" from Southwest Louisiana R&B to Westside Classics to Doo Wop to Chicano Soul.

  Alfred Garcia of Alfred & Joe fame ("Darling Dear") was honored before the show.

It was a special treat to hear him sing "Darling Dear" accapella with Greg Esparza and Johnny B back stage.

Every song by every artist was a highlight on this star studded show and I will just name a few. A young girl named Dahlia with doo wop singer Jonny B performed a version of the Students "My Vow To You" that knocked my socks off.  They also sang "Queen Of My Heart" Greg Esparza of Thee Midniters and Jonny B sang "Darling Dear" in a tribute to Alfred Garcia. Greg Esparaza sang one of my all-time favorite tunes "It'll Never Be Over For Me"

Rico Del Barrio from San Antonio, Texas sang "No More Foolish Pride" an original composition from his CD "From The Shadows Of Legends" The tune really knocked me out and I highly recommend you seek out a copy to hear him for yourself.

The most incredible performance of the night was David Luna & Ray Juarez of The Royal Chessmen performing the Eastside classic "Begging You" They too were honored before the show.

VINYL CLASSICS - LOS ANGELINOS - EASTSIDE RENAISSANCE

Los Angelinos - Eastside Renaissance was released in 1983 on Zyanya Records and labeled as Punk, Garage Rock, Pop Rock, Soul, and Salsa. The music selections reflect the wide variety that was a part of the Eastside Renaissance in music. The album was distributed by Rhino Records. What sets this LP apart from other compilations is each bands strong commitment to include social commentary in the music.

PACHUCO SOUL

Released in 2004 on both compact disc and vinyl LP by the Vampisoul Label and licensed from Rampart Records/Gordo Enterprises, PACHUCO SOUL - A COLLECTION OF RARE EAST LA GROOVES is another fines set of track tracks from the vaults of Rampart Records showcasing the East Side Sound.

For LA's East Side kids, Eddie Davis was The Man. Eddie founded what would become the Motown for the California Chicanos: Rampart Records, and from the beginning of his career as a record producer in 1958 into the early nineties, his groups gave rise to a unique genre eventually dubbed "The West Coast Eastside Sound" or "Pachuco Soul": the music coming out of East L.A. in the early 60s from bands formed by Mexican American musicians. Eddie "was trying to do with Chicanos what Motown was doing with Blacks". Davis' "family of musicians" was an outlet of expression for the young Chicano scene, and helped give legitimacy to the culture of lowrider cars, "cholos and cholas": Mexican American kids had found their own scene and dances. Davis was in the right place at the right time, and his dedication to the music helped a scene of young L.A. musicians establish a new sound. In the words of KPFA Berkeley music director, Chuey Varela, "Eddie caught the vibe and laid the foundation for everything that followed". In this compilation, a tribute to that magnificent musical adventure, you can find the very best and hottest music that ever came out from Rampart Records.
