EASTSIDE BANDS - JOHNNY GAMBOA & THE CROWNS

Johnny Gamboa hails from Los Angeles, California. His musical background comes from his father Pepe who was an accomplished guitarist and designed one of the first three neck guitars
.
  At the age of four, Johnny was already singing and playing a variety of percussion instruments. By twelve he was playing guitar and singing the songs of the time. In his first year of high school, he formed his own band naming it Johnny & The Crowns.

The original Crowns  were Max Johnny & Danny. The band would later grow to 16 members and would include Jimmy Espinoza of Thee Midniters fame as a backing vocalist & bongo player.

In his senior year he was backing up the likes of  Little Richard, Kathy Young, Ron Holden, Marvin & Johnny & the Olympics
.
  In 1962, Johnny recorded "Why Lover" and "She's Never There" for Ron Barrett and Jack Nitzsche. The record was released on the Star Revue label (Star Revue 1003). "Why Lover" is one of the finest teen sounds ever recorded & the Star Revue release is extremely rare.

In 1964, The Johnny Gamboa Sextet played at The Salesian High School Rock & Roll Show and performed "Down At The Chicken Shack" and "Moody's Mood For Love". (See my post: VINYL CLASSICS - THE SALESIAN HIGH SCHOOL ROCK & ROLL SHOWS).

The Johnny Gamboa Sextet band members:

Unknown Member - 2nd cello

Johnny later signed a recording contract with Epic records.  In 1969, Johnny recorded "Good Feelin' Day" and "Kind & Good Woman" (Epic 5-10561)

Johnny became a very accomplished musician and learned to play 26 different instruments.

VINYL CLASSICS - LITTLE JULIAN HERRERA "YOUR CARELESS LOVE"

  This was Little Julian's last record which was released on the Emmo label (Emmo 3302) circa 1963. After this record's release, Little Julian would disappear into obscurity.

  Both sides of the record "Your Careless Love" and "You Will Cry" are classic Eastside Sound tunes. This is my favorite Little Julian record and it's a shame he didn't make more. For more information on Little Julian and these songs please check my EASTSIDE LEGENDS post on Little Julian Herrera.

EASSTSIDE ARTISTS- BOBBY DOMINGUEZ AKA BOBBY DOMINO

I don't have any real information on Bobby Dominguez other than he cut a rare teen record on the Donna label. For sure Bobby was from the Los Angeles area. There is a drummer named Bobby Dominguez who played with many band but I am not sure if he is the one.

In 1961 Bobby Domino recorded "Your Love For Me" and "Marilyn" a rare teener for the Donna label. (Donna 1339).

Rosalie Hamlin was born on July 21st, 1945 in Clamath Falls, Oregon. She attended National City's Sweetwater High School located just outside of San Diego, California.

  At age fourteen Rosie wrote a poem about a teenage love called "Angel Baby" In the summer of 1961, Rosie & her group traveled to San Marcos, California where they recorded the song on an old two-track recorder in an old airplane hanger. A second song was recorded. An ad-libbed tuned they called "Give Me Love"

  The group had trouble landing a record deal so they took the 45 to Kresge's Department Store in San Diego. The store manager played the demo & lucky for them a representative from Highland records was in the store on business. he took the demo to his boss Syd Talmadge in Hollywood. A few weeks later the record was played on the Alan Freed show on KDAY and it became a national hit. "Angel Baby" and "Give Me Love" were released on the Highland label (Highland 1011). Writer credits were given to David Ponci because he was the eldest member of the group. This would lead to royalty battles and would take years to straighten out. "Angel Baby" became one one the most beloved songs of the Eastside and would reach number five on the Billboard charts.

In 1962, on the advice of Jackie Wilson, Rosie moved to the Brunswick label who also released "Lonely Blue Nights" and "We'll Have A Chance" as a single (Brunswick 55205)

A follow-up single was also released by Brunswick in 1961. "My Darling Forever" and "The Time Is Near" crediting only Rosie on the label. (Brunswick 55213)

In 1962 Brunswick would release an album entitled "Lonely Blue Nights With Rosie" (Brunswick 54102).

Later in 1962 Globe Records would release a Rosie & The Originals single "My One And Only Love" and "Kinda Makes You Wonder" (Globe 401)

In 1973 Rosie made a comeback and released a rare 45 on the Wax World label, "You're No Good" and "I Don't Understand"  (Wax World 3265). "You're No Good" is a cover of the tune first recorded by Dee Dee Warwick and later a smash hit for Betty Everett.

EASTSIDE LEGENDS - ROSIE AND RON

Out of Chino, California, Lucy Duran (Velveteens) and Ralph Valdez of Hawthorne were billed as Rosie & Ron by Del-Fi/Donna label owner Bob Keane. He wanted to capitalize on the popularity of Rosie & The Originals & Ronnie & The Pomona Casuals who also had hits at the time.

  Two ballads "So Dearly" and "Bring Me Happiness" both penned by Ruben Pando were recorded in 1961 with the Velveteens backing and released on the Donna label (Donna 1338). The record became a number 1 seller in the Los Angeles area. It was released with two different label variations.

EASTSIDE ARTISTS - RENE AND RAY

The vocal duo, Rene & Ray recorded one of the most heralded songs of the Eastside Sound. Rene was Pablo Valenzuela. a dark skinned Puerto Rican kid from Glendora, California. Ray was Ray Quinones better know as "Spider Ray" from East LA.

  Ray Quinones had previously cut a single "So Dearly" and "Bring Me Happiness" with Lucy Duran as Rosie & Ron for the Donna label (Donna 1338) in 1961.

  The songs "Queen Of My Heart" and "Do What You Feel" were recorded with Paul Buff at his Pal Recording Studios in Cucamonga, California in 1962. The finished masters were eventually turned over to Bob Keane who released them on his Donna label (Donna 1360)
.
  "Queen Of My Heart" reached number 5 on the local charts and cracked Billboard's Top 100 at number 76 becoming the first record by a Hispanic duo to do so.
