Mark Guerrero in concert at his alma mater, Cal State Los Angeles! CSULA State Playhouse, December 7, 2013, 7:30 p.m. Mark will perform an acoustic set of his music, some of which will be backed vocally by Ernie Hernandez and the legendary Geree Gonzalez, and an electric set, backed by a five-piece band consisting of Ron Reyes (guitar), Jimi Seville (keyboard), Louis Ruiz (bass), Manny Lizardo (drums), and Marco Palos (sax). The electric set will feature Mark's music, but also three of his father's (Lalo Guerrero) songs, "Los Chucos Suaves," "Muy Sabroso Blues," and "Tin Marin de do Pingue." Some of Mark's songs he'll perform during the electric set include "On the Boulevard," "I'm Brown," "The Streets of East L.A.," and "Zoot Suit." He will also perform "Get Your Baby," an instrumental he recorded with his teenage band Mark & the Escorts in the '60s. "Get You Baby" has became an "Eastside Sound" and garage rock classic, appearing on at least six compilation albums. THE CONCERT IS FREE THE PUBLIC! The concert is one of the events surrounding the exhibit, "American Sabor- Latinos In U.S. Popular Music," which is now in the Fine Arts Gallery located in the Fine Arts building on the campus of Cal State L.A. The exhibit will run through February 9, 2014. Cal State L.A. is located at 5151 State University Drive, Los Angeles, CA 90032, phone: (323) 343-3000. The campus is just North of the 10 freeway where it crosses the 710 freeway.
The 4th annual Chicano Soul Legends in concert takes place this Saturday night, December 7th, 2013. The venue has moved from the Gibson over to the Honda Center in Anaheim, CA.
Once again Willie G & Thee Midniters headline the show. Check out this poster for list of performers & show details.
Thee Midniters first album was titled "Thee Midniters" but is has become better known as the "Whittier Blvd" album. It was released in 1965 on the Chattahoochee label (CH-1001) and (CH-666).
The album was re-released on Eddie Torres' Whittier label in 1966. (Whittier W-1001)

The band's debut album was a combination of stomping rockers & soulful ballads. Right from the word go, Thee Midniters showed their musical versatility instrumentally and vocally. With Willie Garcia on lead, Thee Midniters recorded instant Eastside classics covering Nat King Cole's "That's All", Lenny Welch's "I Need Someone" and Jerry Butler's "Giving Up On Love"
The album also features a studio version of their first single "Land Of 100 Dances" written by Chris Kenner. Rocking cover versions include "Slow Down", "Money" and Johnny B Goode"
Thee Midniters showed their British invasion influence by covering the obscure Rolling Stones tune "Empty Heart. "Whittier Blvd" (East LA's cruising anthem) was influenced by the Rolling Stones "2120 South Michigan Avenue" and one of the band's signature tunes.
Add to all this a fine cover of Marvin Gaye's "Stubborn Kind Of Fellow", the beautiful romantic ballad "To Be With You" and the mid-tempo blue-eyed soul "Come Back Baby" and you have a real winner on your hands.
Vinyl versions of these albums are hard to find but certainly worth seeking out.

This is a special DJ set surveying the “Eastside Sound” of 1960′s Los Angeles by a man who was in the midst of it all. Mark Guerrero is the son of the late legendary singer/songwriter, Lalo Guerrero who is widely considered the “Father of Chicano Music.”
Mark began performing at age 13 with his rock band Mark & The Escorts, and often shared the bill with storied groups such as Cannibal & The Headhunters, The Premiers, The Blendells, and Thee Midniters.
Later he formed the group, The Men From S.O.U.N.D.. who were also popular in the Eastside scene.
Mark is an accomplished historian who posts various insightful music writing on his website. I trust you will enjoy his thirty song retrospective of some of the tunes that made LA’s Eastside rock scene of the 60′s such a remarkable movement. Mark was joined in the studio by Ganas of Mas Exitos for an enlightening conversation to accompany the music.

Today is a day of celebration honoring mothers around the world. Traditionally it is a day to let someone else do the cooking and entertaining. I am taking my mother out for some fine food & refreshments.
I have put together a compilation of female cover versions to play in the car as we drive to our destination. They are mostly by female artists of the Eastside Sound and are the best of the best.
Enjoy this day of celebration in honoring the memories of mothers past & present.
