HAPPY MOTHERS DAY

Today is a day of celebration honoring mothers around the world. Traditionally it is a day to let someone else do the cooking and entertaining. I am taking my mother out for some fine food & refreshments.

I have put together a compilation of female cover versions to play in the car as we drive to our destination. They are mostly by female artists of the Eastside Sound and are the best of the best.

YOU FOUND THAT EASTSIDE SOUND is one year old today. I wish to thank everyone who has followed this site & thank those artists who have e-mailed me with their thoughts & corrections.

It has taken me a year to lay the ground work and explore the musical roots. What lies ahead in year two is what I call the "meat & potatoes" of the Eastside Sound. The emergence of manager/record producers Eddie Davis & Billy Cardenas and manager Eddie Torres gave the Eastside Sound what it lacked. There was no lack of talent or great music. There just wasn't enough promotion. With the help of these promoters, the Eastside Sound would make it's impact on the national scene.


The music continued to grow and mature with the times right along side Beatlemania and Motown. There were more weekend dances and concerts as the East L.A. bands filled venues in the Los Angeles area. Radio stations began  sponsoring concerts and heavily promoting them over the airwaves.

A large number of car clubs were formed & cruising Whittier Boulevard became a way of life.

From the mid 1960's through the end of the decade a number of bands would make the scene & we will take a good look at the artists and their music. We will also look at some of the legendary record labels.


It was truly "the best of times".

HOMEMADE COMPILATIONS - UNDER THE COVERS (ON THE LATIN SIDE) SERIES

For those of you who follow this site, there have been no new posts for the past couple of months due to some personal medical issues. I am happy to say that I am receiving medical treatments, am feeling much better and will continue examining the Eastside Sound.

Commuting on the freeways of Los Angeles can be a very frustrating ride. To help control my road rage I put together musical compilations to listen to in my car CD player. From time to time I still enjoy the sights & sounds of cruising Whitier Boulevard and you gotta have some cool sounds to listen to.

What started out as a couple of volumes from my own collection has blossemed into a series. I have always enjoyed listening to and collecting "cover versions" of classic tunes by other artists. Chicano artists of yesterday and today have always been in the forefront of covering oldies and soulful tunes. In recent years I have made it a habit to attend Chicano Soul concerts and found that there are many artists new & old that are still performing and keeping this music alive The music is truly worth seeking out and buying. Please help support these artists.

But the true inspiration for my recent collecting and this series is disc jockey, Chico Manqueros of the East LA Revue site and his progam "Gozando With Chico". Chico brings us a show with a mixture of latin Soul, jazz, the sounds of congas, timbalas, saxophones, trumpets, guitarras and the best in suave rhythms. He plays many cover songs by artists of today and yesterday and does a firme job in his selection and musical tastes. You can check Chico out here:

I waited over a decade hoping someone would put out a second volume to the Pura Raza Aztlan series but no one did. (at least no one that I have been able to track down). So I decided to put together one of my own.
  I have put together 24 tracks mixing some classic Eastside Oldies with some Westside Oldies. The result is another great set of pure Chicano Soul. This is not available for sale or download.

HOMEMADE COMPILATIONS - PURA RAZA AZTLAN VOLUME 1

I picked this one up for five bucks from a street vendor while roaming Sunset Boulevard in Echo Park. Turned out to be the best five bucks I've ever spent.
Released in 2000 on PRA Records and printed in Spain (gotta be a homemade compilation), this CD features 23 tracks of pure Chicano Soul. The Eastside Sound is well represented here with Willie G, Thee Midniters, Salas Brothers & Perez Brothers. Also included is the Westside Sound with likes of Sunny & The Sunglows and the Royal Jesters.
  Track for track it's hard to find a disc with so many great tunes. If you don't have a copy I recommend you hunt one down. I still see copies avalable at auction & set sale prices.
