RECOMMENDED READING:CHICANO SOUL

THIS IS A REVIEW POSTED BY AMAZON:

In 2007, Ruben Molina published the first-ever history of Mexican-American soul and R&B music in his book, Chicano Soul: Recordings and History of an American Culture. Ten years later, Chicano Soul remains an important and oft-referenced study of this vital but often overlooked chapter of the greater American musical experience. Chicano soul music of the 1950s and 1960s still reverberates today, both within Chicano communities and throughout many musical genres. Molina tells the story of the roots of Chicano soul, its evolution, and its enduring cultural influence. "Brown-eyed soul" music draws on 1950s era jazz, blues, jump blues, rock 'n' roll, Latin jazz, and traditional Mexican music such as ranchera, norteo, and conjunto music. With its rare and gorgeous photos, record scans, concert bills, and impressive updated discography (to say nothing of its rich oral histories and interviews), it is one of those rare works that speaks to both general and academic audiences

EDITOR'S NOTE:

The 10th anniversary edition is an absolute must for the record collector if only for the fact that the discograhly has been updated with many new vinyl entries.

The text is more concise and easy to ready and very informative. Mr Molina is the ultimate authority in the field of Chicano culture and soul record collecting.

RECOMMENDED READING - LAND OF A THOUSAND DANCES (REVISED EDITION)

If you buy one book related to The Eastside Sound, this is it. I first reviewed this book back in April of 2011 when I owned the first edition. I recently purchased the revised second edition and felt that because it is the most important written document of this genre of music that it was worth a second look.

I have used this book as a chronological guideline in putting this site together and find myself fascinated every time I read and re-read it.

"Land Of A Thousand Dances" was first published in 1998 and the revised second edition was published in March 2009. The revised edition has an expanded introduction and discography and features more photographs as well as a new cover.

Authors David Reyes and Tom Waldman took their love of this music and the interviews and stories told by the artists, managers & producers who made this musical history and turned it into a masterful lierary work. From the pre-rock era in Southern California through East L.A.'s very own Los Lobos, the stories of this magical and historical genre of rock & roll are here for you to read.

The book is available through Amazon and other fine book retailers. Please pick up a copy. You won't be disappointed.

RECOMMENDED READING - CRUISING FOR COMMUNITY: YOUTH CULTURE AND POLITICS IN LOS ANGELES 1910-1970

I haven't bought a copy of this one yet but I have skimmed through a pdf file of this book and it looks to be anothe fascinating and informative read.

"Cruisin For Community: Youth Culture And Politics In Los Angeles, 1910-1970" was written by Matthew Allan Ides. Published by ProQuest, UMI Dissertation Publishing on Sptember 11, 2011 and coming in at 430 pages the book does include a section on the musical, cultural & political events in East Los Angeles during the height of the Eastside Sound.

Here is Amazon's review:

"Cruising for Community" examines youth culture in Los Angeles from the Progressive era of the early 1900s to the civil rights, antiwar, and counterculture movements of the 1960s. During this period, youth culture developed as a product of the triangular relationship of the state, the market, and youth subcultures. From early hot rodders to post-industrial punks, youth subcultures provided young people a means to develop local music, dancing, sports, and fashion. Through subcultures, young Angelinos like Jewish socialists and Chicano activists struggled to create a more just and multicultural city. L.A.'s suburban sprawl and corresponding social structures coordinated subcultures, and youth culture was expressed spatially. Cruising---parading without permit---represents young Angelinos' appropriation of the street to forge belonging, friendship and new identities. Whereas many historians have claimed that generations are essential to historical change, this dissertation identifies instances of collaboration as well as resistance across age groups. Local middlemen saw the profitability of youth subcultures and through co-optation placed locally generated products on the national market. Concurrently, adult youth experts lobbied to manage youth culture as a way to ensure social stability and common civic identity. This sometimes resulted in draconian policies such as the closing of cruising strips; at other points, youth experts encouraged collaboration, leading to organizations like adult-sponsored car clubs. The mobilizing power of youth culture was recognized by progressive youth leaders, who supported groups of young Angelinos in challenging the social inequities found within their communities; political demonstrations and school walkouts appropriated the city's structures to critique inequity, creating the means for a shared political identity. While cruising represented a balance between the market, the state, and young people, other alignments alienated youth---often along class, race, ethnic, and gender lines---and denied them autonomy with dramatic consequences, such as the Zoot Suit Riot and Watts Uprising. "Cruising for Community" gives an analysis of local youth culture that accounts for its evolution, attendant subcultures, and role in 20th century American history. As such, the dissertation connects cultural studies of youth with American urban history, critically contributing to investigations of modern youth, youth culture, and politics.

RECOMMENDED READING - ROCK THE NATION

Roberto Avant-Mier is Associate Professor in the Department of Communication, University of Texas, El Paso. His research focuses on the discursive construction of Latino/a identity(ies) as well as cultural issues in popular music and other media. In addition to research on Latino/as and rock music (in various sub-genres), other forthcoming research focuses on rap music and world music.
In his book "Rock The Nation Latin/O Identities And The Rock Diaspora", author Roberto Avant-Mier looks at the Latino influence in many of rock's genres including the Eastside Sound, Tex-Mex, Hard Rock & even rap.

Here is a review fron the GoodReads website:

This is an alternative history of rock music, from a Latino/Hispanic perspective, which focuses on the story of the rock genre with an emphasis on identity politics. "Rock the Nation" amounts to a first-time-ever scholarly study of Latino/Hispanic identity through an examination of the history of rock 'n' roll music by linking Latin Rock from the U.S. with Latin Rock music from Latin America. As the author argues, the developments of both U.S.-based Latin Rock music and non-U.S. Latin Rock illuminate several contemporary issues and reveal interesting paradoxes with regard to identity politics (e.g., language, culture, race, class, gender and nationality). Music in Spanish has been used to resist English and the imposition of mainstream U.S. culture in general; yet for Latin Americans, singing in English and adopting U.S. popular culture has allowed youth to resist the hegemonic nationalisms of their own countries (i.e., countering notions of U.S. cultural imperialism). Therefore, in both U.S.- Latin Rock and Latin American Rock music, the rock 'n' roll genre reveals how Latino/a youth use rock music for achieving assimilation to mainstream culture(s) at the same time that they resist the hegemony of dominant culture(s).

I have just recently purchased this book and will be back with my own review after I give it a good read.

RECOMMENDED READING - VOICES OF LATIN ROCK

While the Eastside Sound was taking shape during the mid to late 1960's with artists like Thee Midniters, Cannibal & The Headhunters, Salas Brothers & Little Ray, a new sound was being born in Northern California, specifically in San Francisco's Mission District Barrio.
In the heat of this politically charged, psychedelic era, this barrio became a veritable incubator for a new breed of bands that fused burning acid guitar to a base of boiling Latin percussion. This sound came to be known as Latin Rock (Chicano Rock)
Author Jim McCarthy takes an in-depth look at the roots and rise of this explosive music. Artists, Santana, Malo, Azteca, Dakila and Sapo are among tthe artist profiles. The book features exclusive interviews and over 800 photographs.
I highly recommend you picking up a copy of this book if you are into any of these artists or a fan of Latin Rock.

RECOMMENDED READING - A WORLD OF ITS OWN

Matt Garcia is an associate professor of American civilization and ethnic studies at Brown University.
His book A WORLD OF ITS OWN  is yet another look at the intercultural struggles of the Greater Los Angeles area tracing back to the 1900's
He explores the social & cultural forces that helped make the city the expansive & diverse metropolis it is today.
The book presents historical & educational information and has many rare photographs. The highlight of the book is a chapter called "Memories Of El Monte" where Mr Garcia gives a fascinating account of the hay days of El Monte Legion Stadium and other dance halls in Greater Los Angeles.
This chapter alone makes the book worth buying.

RECOMMENDED READING - HISTORY OF A BARRIO EAST LOS ANGELES

Though this book does not deal with music, HISTORY OF A BARRIO - EAST LOS ANGELES by Ricardo Romo, it is an insightful look at the story of the East Los Angeles barrio in it's formative years 1900-1930.
Author, Ricardo Romo examines the resourcefulness of Mexican Americans who attempted to sustain a culture within a culture in the face of social, economic and political dicrimination.
The foundation that would be built during these years would set the stage for massive migration of Mexicans into Southern California and their involvement in industrial and commercial growth. in the 1950's and 1960's.
Their successes and failures would ultimately lead to expression not only in the political area but also in art, music and literature. Through their expression in music, the East Side Sound would be born.

Ricardo Romo is an author and associate professor of history at the University of Texas at Austin.

The book is readily available and well worth seeking out.

RECOMMENDED READING - L.A. R&B VOCAL GROUPS 1945-1965

Authors Steve Propes & Galen Gart have put together a powerful book exploring the Los Angeles rhythm & blues music scene spanning the years 1945 to 1965. Artists relating to the Eastside Sound are well respesented in this book as well as soul, rhythm & blues and doo wop. It reads like a dictionary with the artists being listed in alphabetical order. Loaded with historical facts gathered by Steve Propes through actual interviews and listings of  records from his own collection, this is another must have.
One of the most interesting things in the book is a Greater Los Angles Music History Map which shows where high schools, record companies, movie theaters etc. were located during those years. I'm sure you can tell by the looks of my book that I refer to it a lot.

Steve Propes is a disc jockey, record collector and music historian. I first started listening to Steve on the radio in the early 1980's on KLON-FM out of Long Beach, California. He currently can be heard on station WPMD out of Cerritos, California over the internet on Saturday mornings called "The 45's Show", He doesn't just play the records. He gives lots of historical information on the labels & the artists themselves. His guests sometimes include record collectors or artists from that musical era. I recommend you check out his show.

From what I've heard Steve is currently working on expanding & revising the book.
