Five 45 RPM records comprise the complete works of Little Julian Herrera. Since he is my favorite Eastside singer, I highly recommend this compact disc.

Besides the music this from this incredibly talented vocalist, the highlight of this disc is "Little Julian's Secret", a KCRW radio documentary exploring the mysterious life and legend of Little Julian. The documentary is truly fascinating and well worth the price of admission. You may listen to "Unfictional - Little Julian's Secret"
by doing a Google search which KCRW has archived.

Little Julian Herrera was born Ronald Wayne Gregory in Massachusetts to Hungarian Jewish parents and ran away from home ending up in Boyle heights, California. There a Mexican-American family took him in and he used the family's name, Herrera. The name Little Julian came from Don Julian of the meadowlarks who had a hit with "Heaven & Paradise" at the time.

Little Julian met Johnny Otis who asked him to perform in his shows at El Monte Legion Stadium where he became a star attraction. In the summer of 1956 Little Julian would record for Otis' newlt formed Dig label. The session would produce "Lonely, Lonely Nights" and "In Exchange For Your Love" The group backing Little Julian is probably The Premiers who were also on the Dig label. The record would be a big hit locally but would do little elsewhere. In 1957 a follow-up record "Symbol Of Heaven" and "Here In My Arms" was released.

In late 1957 Julian signed with record producer Art Laboe who introduced him to The Tigers, a vocal group from Pomona. They recorded for the Starla label "I Remember Linda" and "True Fine Mama"

The A side was a minor hit in L.A. because Art Laboe plugged it on his radio show. The group appeared as Little Julian herrera & The Tigers in a San Diego theater show but at the end of the show the police came and arrested Julian accusing him of statutory rape. two others were also accused but for some reason the charges against them were dropped leaving only Julian charged. This killed record sales and after a stint in jail he would disappear later to be found at a car wash on National City Blvd and picking string beans on the Otay Mesa.

He once again disappeared and was rediscovered by "Huggy Boy", Dick Hugg in 1963 playing in a nightclub in Tijuana. Huggy Boy got  him back into the studio and released one single on his Essar label with an update version of "Lonely Lonely Nights" and "I Want To Be With You" Of major interest to record collectors, there are two markedly different takes of 'Lonely Lonely Nights"issued on the essar label with identical release numbers for which there is no know explanation. In these recordings Julian was backed by the band from Bellflower-Long Beach area, The Illusions.

After another recording for Emmo Records "Your Careless Love" and "You Will Cry", Julian disappeared into obscurity never to be seen again

Two of the finest gentlemen I have ever met, Benny and Joe Rodriguez have recorded a new CD entitled "Greeting from East LA"

Eastside legends, Benny and Joe are better known as The Heartbreakers and have been part of the Eastside music scene since the early 1960's. (See my post EASTSIDE LEGENDS - THE HEARTBREAKERS) and continue to perform locally and in various parts of the country today.

Although Benny and Joe have been singing and performing together for more that 50 years their voices have not missed a beat. Many critics have dubbed the "Eastside Sound" as duet vocal harmony. If that is the case The Heartbreakers are among the finest.

On this CD, Benny and Joe have re-recorded many of their vinyl classics. Songs like "Cradle Rock", "Every Time I See You", "She Is My Baby" and my personal favorite, "Please Answer" sound amazingly like their records which to me is a good thing.

Also included on the CD is the beautiful ballad "Baby I Love You So" penned by Eastside legend Mark Guerrero and two tunes penned by Eastside rocker, Chan Romero entitled  "Trying To Forget You" and "I Don't Care".

Rounding out the CD is a cover of the Clovers' classic, "I Played The Fool" and the beautiful Spanish language "Aquel Amor" (That Love).

Chick Carlton is a singer/songwriter from the early days of the Eastside Sound. He has worked with the groups the Majestics and Aldermen and even sung with Barry White (Please see my entry under EASTSIDE BANDS - CHICK CARLTON AND THE MAJESTICS)

Chick has recorded a new album entitled 90 MILES FROM VEGAS.

This album brings a fresh sound to todays music scene and takes from Chick's vast musical backgrounds. Those backgrounds are in soul, blues, R&B, Latin Rhythm and he even throws in a touch of reggae.

What makes this album most interesting to me is that Chick has written these songs from his life experiences giving the tunes a more personal touch than most of todays music.

The opening track "Liberace" is a tribute to pianists that even Elton John would be proud to say he recorded.

"90 Miles From Vegas", the title track wowed me immediately with it's Latin Rhythm.

Ballad lovers will enjoy the sincere lyrics Chick has written on tracks like "Once Upon A Time"
"Valentino Smiles"' "Love Is Like An Eagle" and Wild Horse in The Rain"

The bluesy tunes "Names On A Napkin" and :"My Dancing Shoes" show Chick's versatility in vocal style.

I could swear I hear a hint of reggae on the track "Sails In The Wind"

The album closes with the spiritual "Let My Like Speak For Me". The track gives you the feeling of being right there in church with Chick and the band.

Credit must be given to Chick's fine selection of band mates who help bring the songs to life.

I highly recommend you seeking out Chick's fine piece of musical mastery.

The Authors

Max Uballez was born in a tenement on 4th and Hewitt, a few blocks from downtown Los Angeles, CA., and raised in the William Mead Housing Projects. A self-taught musician and composer, he recorded his first album when he was nineteen years old with The Romancers.
Max produced and co-produced several iconic hits of the ‘60’s, including Land of 1000 Dances by Cannibal and the Headhunters, and has worked with Eddie Davis, Bob Keane, Frank Zappa, Sergio Mendes, Ahmet Ertegun and Fred Catero. Max’s first album, Do the Slauson, is considered the blueprint for the Chicano East Side Sound, and Max has been called the Brian Wilson of ‘60’s Southern California Chicano music. He is featured in the PBS documentary, Chicano Rock. Max is a practicing Buddhist and CEO of Xela-Co Media, LLC.

Alexander Uballez was born in the San Francisco Bay Area, CA. He has lived in Los Angeles, CA and New York City, and currently resides in Albuquerque, NM., where he prosecutes crimes against children for the people of the State of New Mexico.

RECOMMENDED LISTENING - LIL RAY JIMENEZ "MR SHAKE! SHOUT! & SOUL

It is times like these that I am glad that I still cruise Whittier Boulevard & patronize the businesses in East Los Angeles because that is where I found this compact disc.

I have been hearing for years that a Little Ray Jimenez greatest hits compilation (authorized by Little Ray himself) was in the works but never materialized. I am sure that THIS CD is NOT legit & I don't know who put it out but I am glad I own a copy.

Little Ray is one of the biggest stars & greatest voices of the Eastside Sound. Please see my post EASTSIDE LEGENDS - LITTLE RAY JIMENEZ (entry May 5,2012).

"Mr Shake! Shout! & Soul" is a compilation of Little Ray's Dore, ATCO, Impact, Faro, Warner Brothers & Columbia singles; both A & B sides. Also included are two tracks form the East LA College Rock & Roll Show 1964; "Ooh Baby Baby" and "For Your Love"

For me the highlight is a track entitled "Someday" (Columbia Records). This song does not appear on any Little Ray discographies that I have seen.

I always advise COLLECTORS to seek out the original vinyl but some of these 45's are extremely hard to find such as "My Rainbow" (Dore Records) which is still on my want list. This CD is an Eastside MUST!!

Recording artist Lil Ray Jimenez aka Mr. Shake, Shout & Soul will be returning for a Valentine Souldies Review special performance. Included on his set list will be songs he recorded starting at the tender age of 11 years young to his features with the major record company Columbia, including; There Is Something On Your Mind, Loretta, My Girl, I'll Keep On loving you, My Rainbow, Leave Her Alone and others. 

Lil Ray Jimenez started his singing career at the age of 7 years young when his elder brother convinced a local high school band to let him sing on stage. After the exuberatant delivery of Elvis Presley's Hound Dog and Ready Teddy by Little Richard, the self taught singer would be a regular performer for the Delano based Rhythm Kings. Mastering the sounds from a juke box by artist like Presley, Richards and Fats Dominos, Lil Ray earned the billing moniker of Lil Elvis.

His musical studies would lead him to the mastering of rock-n-roll, R&B, Blues and crooning alike. At the age of 11, he was approached by Ed Cobb of the Four Preps to record the 1957 version of There's Something On Your Mind, originally recorded by Big Jay McNeely. By the time he reached 15, Lil Ray had committed to his singing career and made the move to Los Angeles where in short time he would perform for Otis Redding and make his way onto the Los Angeles circuit having the opportunity to study first hand the performances of Jackie Wilson, Brook Benton and Ray Charles. 

In 1962 he released Shake! Soul! & Shout! backed with Soul Stomp! accompanied by the Premiers of Farmer John fame on the Impact label for Tony Hilder. Eventually Lil Ray would become a member of the legendary East LA band, Thee Midnighters recording a response to Mary Well's My Guy, called My Girl with the flip side featuring his own recording, Loretta. Shortly after, Lil Ray exited Thee Midnighters to continue pursuing a solo career.

Lil Ray continued to develop his style of uptempo, Blues, R&B and crooning which would lead him into his next few projects including the formation of Little Ray & the Progressions. A professionally polished band which recorded the Benny King classic standard, I who have Nothing, pressed opposite of the Arthur Lee song, I Been Trying. The group then evolved into The Little Ray Motown Revue which included the production of two bands, the Epic's and the 4 Clef's, and an all female back up vocalist group called the Rayettes who performed throughout the Los Angeles iconic venues including the Montebello Ballroom, the Big Union Hall, the Huntington Park Ball Room, the Boulevard Theater and the Shrine Auditorium. 

Lil Ray's ability to develop talent as well as perform, lead him into the ultimate entertainment gig of writing and producing for Columbia Records. Relocating for the label to New York, he would rejoin forces with another East LA band who had migrated to the Big Apple on behalf of the label called Cannibal & the Head Hunters. With them, Little Ray would produce several songs that were never released. After two and a half years, Ray returned to Los Angeles where he would rejoin forces with his Midnighters counter, Willie G in the formation of the gospel group, God's Children. Since then Lil Ray has continued to make his way through the greater Los Angeles area performing for various private and public bookings while running his own recording studios.

Currently Lil Ray still owns and operates Sanctuary Studios which he houses in his two story building in Los Angeles, California. The building has been completely renovated by Lil Ray himself to accommodate the numerous projects has embarked upon including the development of a video section of his studios. Along with running the studio and producing projects for others, Lil Ray has a renewed vigor in taking his show on the road again thus returning to Riverside since his last stop in 2012 for the University of California at Riverside's Chicano Student Programs 16th Annual Radio Aztlan Music Festival where he performed to a sold out audience.

This years performance will be taking place in Downtown Riverside at the Mission Tobacco Lounge located at 3630 University Ave, Riverside, CA 92501. Doors open at 8pm with a performance time of 9pm. The venue has an intimate limited occupancy making this another Lil Ray Jimenez sold out event. Tickets prices are $20.00 per person and available at the venue box office.
